Ciaran Kilkenny says he would love to see Jack McCaffrey back in a Dublin jersey again but believes the Clontarf man’s departure will open up opportunities for those fighting for a place in the All-Ireland champions’ starting 15.

McCaffrey has been instrumental for the Dubs over the past decade which saw them capture seven All-Ireland SFC titles, four All-Star awards and the Footballer of the Year award in 2015 and, speaking on the opening day of the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps yesterday, Kilkenny said he respects the 26-year-old’s decision to call time.

“You’d love to have Jack around,” said the Castleknock clubman. “He’s a great person, he’s a great character, he’s a great personality. You can feel his energy around the group – he’s a great leader within the group. So, you just have to respect his decision.

“But also it’s a great opportunity for a lot of players to perform now in the club championship, and the great thing about Dessie (Farrell) and his management team is that he has an open door policy.”
